The Wisdom
of Jesus Son of Sirach. |
The author of this
book was Jesus Ben Sira (in Hebrew, "Joshua Son of Sirach"),
who was a noted teacher of the second century B.C. The contents of the
book closely resemble those of the Old Testament book of Proverbs.
The first part of the book contains the author's sayings on moral behavior,
wealth, women, and children. The middle part praises God for his work
in nature and with the people of Israel. The last section praises the
heroes of Israel's history, including Noah, Abraham, Moses, Aaron, and
others. It concludes by honoring Simon the high priest, and giving thanks
to God.
