Babylon was built along the Euphrates River in southern Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq). It was the capital city of the Babylonian empire and its hanging gardens were regarded as one of the seven Babylonwonders of the ancient world.  On the significance of Babylon in the Old Testament see Babylonia.
