Zechariah (NT)

Priest who was the father of John the Baptist.

Luke’s gospel tells that the priest Zechariah was married to a woman named in Elizabeth. They grew old, but had no children. While Zechariah burned incense in the Temple in Jerusalem, an angel appeared to him and announced that he and Elizabeth would have a son who, in the spirit of Elijah, would prepare people for the coming of the Lord. The child name was to be called "John." Zechariah asked how this could be, and the angel said that he would be unable to speak until the child was born. After the birth of the child, Zechariah wrote down that the child was named "John." He was able to speak again and gave praise to God.

An angel told Zechariah that
he would have a son
(Luke 1)
