Deborah
was an Israelite prophetess during a time that Israel was dominated
by the Canaanites. During the Period of the Judges Deborah summoned
a man named Barak to gather the tribes at Mt. Tabor and attack the
Canaanite army led by Sisera. A sudden rainstorm caused the Canaanite
chariots to get stuck in the mud and the Israelites routed them. The
Canaanite general Sisera fled to the tent of a woman named Jael, who
pounded a tent peg through his head as he slept, killing him. After
the overwhelming victory, Deborah sang a triumphal song of praise
to God.
