Caiaphas
was the high priest in the gospel accounts of the trial of Jesus.
He is remembered for the leading part he played in the arrest, trial,
and crucifixion of Jesus. Caiaphas succeeded Annas, his father-in-law,
as high priest, ruling from A.D. 18-36. He also took part in hearings
concerning Peter and John.
