Tobit
suffers blindness and poverty because
of his piety, but is restored with angelic
help.

Tobit was a charitable
and God-fearing Jew who lived in Nineveh at the time of the exile. He took
it upon himself to bury executed Jews, for which he suffered blindness and
poverty. God sent the angel Raphael, disguised as Azariah, a fellow Jew,
to accompany Tobit's son Tobias on his quest for part of his father's lost
fortune. On the way they met Sarah, a Jewish woman whose seven
husbands were killed by a demon through no fault of her own. Tobias married
Sarah, and with the angel's help, destroyed the demon plaguing her life.
He also found his father's money, brought it back to Tobit, and with the
angel's help cured his father's blindness. |
