An account
of the Maccabean martyrs that shows the superiority of reason over
emotion.
|
This book is a speech
that begins by arguing that reason and not emotion must be the guiding force
of human life. The author recounts in grim detail the suffering of the martyrs
during the Maccabean conflict. The heroes include Eleazar the priest, a
mother and her seven sons, each of whom suffered horrible tortures rather
than disobey the commands of God. Because their actions were governed by
reason rather than fear, they died in faith, and have now been exalted to
heavenly glory in the presence of God. |
